N.Z. Spitfires' Full Part In Air Offensive

(Special) LONDON, April 23 The New Zealand Spitfire squadron is taking a full part in the Allied air offensive. It recently was carrying out two operations daily, escorting U.S.A.A.F. Marauders and also dive-bombing military targets.

On April 23 the squadron bombed a target near Cressy in the morning, while later in the day it escorted Marauders bombing Namur. Its pilots have not seen any German fighters lor a month, opposition consisting solely of flak, which caused no loses, although Pilot Officer Frank Transome, of Taihape, had a narrow escape when a splinter broke his perspex hood. For the first time in its history, the squadron is not commanded by a New Zealander. It is now lead by a Scot. Squadron Leader J. Niven, D.F.C., who is popular and efficient. His flight commanders are Flight-Lieutenants Lindsay Elack (Levin), and Kenneth Lee (Auckland. The pilots enjoy the “novelty” of dive-bombing, and have made some very effective attacks. The squadron is now part of the Second Tactical Air Force, and is living under canvas.
