“Signals” In The Middle East

The part played by the Corps of Signals in the Middle East was the theme of a most interesting gddress delivered by Major E. V. Fry to' the Whangarei Rotary Club at the weekly luncheon yesterday. The speaker, who lias returned to Whangarei on furlough after three and a half years’ service, explained the ramifications cf “Signals.” who were responsible for communications of all kinds—signalling as usually understood by that word, telephony, telegraphy and radio. This required expert operators, and, in this connection. the speaker commented upon the remarkable quickness with which dexterity was obtained by trainees. The corps had done a wonderful work in all the campaigns from the time Wavell made his first advance into Libya to the victorious offensive opened at El Alamein and brought to culmination in Tunisia. The address was punctuated with incidents of a highly interesting nature which had come under the personal observation of Major Fry, who was heartily thanked for his contribution.
