12 Ships Daily Added To American Fleet

(Received 1.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, March 14

The Navy Secretai’y (Colonel Knox) •states that the United States fleet would expand to 1944 at a daily average of 12 seagoing ships. He said that the Navy needed almost 500,000 more men to meet the goal of 3.000.000 by the end of the year. Vice-Admiral Randall Jacobs estimated the strength of ad naval services, including the Navy, Marines and Coastguard would be 3,700,000 by the end of the year.

Colonel Knox said the fleet had increased from 913 ships on January 1, 1942, to 4167 by January 1, 1944. He added that carrier-borne aircraft were destroying Japanese planes at a rate of over 13 to one in Central Pacific offensive. Over 600 enemy planes had been destroyed since November. American losses were 45 carrier-borne planes. He pointed out that the enemy had been caught repeatedly with large numbers of aircraft on the ground. Forty per cent, of the 600 were destroyed on the ground.
