Says State Miners Declined Opportunity
(P.A.) GREYMOUTH, This Day.
The armed forces board this morning reviewed the appeals of 257 employees of the Strongman and Liverpool mines whose cases were adjourned from February 21 and 23 to enable them to show an improvement in output. When proceedings opened, Mr. F. A. Kitchingham, for the Crown, stated that the men failed to take advantage of the opportunity presented to increase output. He submitted figures in support of the contention, these showing slight increases in some individual instances but a negligible overall increase. No evidence was called by the Miners' Union, the President of the Union (Mr. P. E. English) offering to make a statement in the body of the court but declining to enter the witness box. Counsel for the men did not address the court which reserved its decisions till 2 o'clock this afternoon.
