Sensation In Bay Of Islands Poil

(Special) KAIKOHE, This Day. Plump voting at Kaikohe was the deciding factor in the Bay of Islands Licensing Committee election, the preliminary result of which is:— J. Pearson (Peria) 517 A. J. Martin (Kaikohe) 494 W. Shaw (Kaikohe) 487 A. A. Potter (Kohukohu) .. 460 T. J. V. Dunlop (Kawakawa) 457 Unsuccessful J. T. B. Taaffe (Kaitaia) .... 413 C. R Cctterill (Moerewa) .. 277 R. T. Wrathall (Mangonui) .. 275 . Potter, Pearson and Wrathall were sitting members. Forty-three absentee and postal votes have still, to come but these cannot affect the result. The amazing interest taken in Kaikohe was stimulated only 48 hours before the pod in a “ticket” for Martin and Shaw. This was organised against a “ticket” allegedly sponsored at Kawakawa on which five candidates were listed. In Kaikohe 322 votes have been counted to date, as against 38 in 1839 and 33 in 1936. Kaikohe voters plumped solidly for Martin and Shaw, local Justices of the Feace, each of whom scored 263 votes in their home centre. J. T. B. Taaffe, chairman of the Kaitaia Town Board, was third at Kaikohe with 60. At Kaitaia, where only five votes had been recorded before noon and the total for the day was 60, Taaffe topped the poll, with Pearson and Wrathall next placed. Most consistent vote-getter throughout the electorate was Pearson. The official count will be made on Monday, and postal votes will not be known until then.
