Hammering Away At Japs. On Burma Front
(8.0. W., 1.30 p.m.) RUGBY, Feb. 24. Mopping-up operations, conducted largely by troops of the Fifth Indian Division, continued successfully in the neighbourhood of Ngakydedauk Pass, Burma, states South-East Asia headquarters. Near the eastern exit of the pass, the Japanese attacked, but were repulsed. In the Mayu Range, operations against remnants of an enemy raiding party continued. East of Kalapanzin an enemy column which suffered severely on Tuesday, was further broken up the following day. Some managed to withdraw south.
In the Kaladan Valley our leading troops have made further advances and are now in possession of important hill features near Kyauktaw. In the Chin hills enemy patrols have been active, but were dispersed on making contact with our troops. In Atwin and Yomas on Monday the enemy made several abortive small-scale attacks upon one of our advanced positions.
Further north, our artillery were in action, shelling a Japanese concentration cn the east bank of the Chindwin. In the Hukawng Valley there were continued operations against the Japanese rearguard south of the Tanai River. Air forces attacked Prome and medium bombers operated in northern Burma. Three of our aircraft are missing.
