CANEERRA, This Day,
Manpower figures supplied by the Australian Labour Minister 'Mr. Holloway) show the severe strain imposed on Australia's manpower resources and the difficulty of finding labour even for the most urgent requirements. Of the tcfial Australian male population of 2,830,000 over 14 years of age. it is revealed that: 2.530,000 are in war work, essential services or with the fighting forces. Apart from the requirements of the services, aircraft production, shipbuilding, ships’ repairs and munitions, the Commonwealth Government needs 72,000 men and women who cannot at present be found. Of the reserve pool of 300,000 males left to the Government from which to meet urgent manpower demands, many cannot be used since they are still attending schools or university or are pensioners or aged persons. Labour demands which the Government cannot fill are for 395,000 males and 85,000 fbmales for permanent jobs and 25,000 males and 145.000 females for seasonal labour such as rural work and food processing.
