More Big Game Fishing Successes
(Special) RUSELL. This Day. More successes this week bring the total of deep-sea fish landed and weighe3 at Russell since Christmas to 13 striped marlin, two mako and two black marlin. Mr L. Bird, of Whangarei, who was accompanying two American naval men, brought home the heaviest fish of the season so far. Fishing off Cape Brett, from the Alma G., on Saturday a .strike was made at 1.15 p.m. and after 25 magnificent leaps in just under two hours practically killed itself for it was finished when brought alongside. Mr Frances Arlidge, the boatman, expressed the opinion that for the size of the fish it put up an unusually spectacular fight. This fi.sh weighed 68filbs and was a fine black marlin. . An American success from the same boat was made by D. McCartney, whor with his friend, M. Kelly, was sampling (the thrills, with Mr Bird. The sailor’s fish gave plenty of sport and proved to be a 230-pounder. DuVing the same day, Mr W. Whitmore, of Otahuhu, who is re-visiting the grounds after a previous prolonged stay at Russell, caught a 2481 b striped mai'lin from Mr G. Warne’s Rosemary/ During the week Mr H. Clifford, of Russell, caught a striped marlin of 2561b5, from the Alma G.. Mr Henry Lee, of Hamilton, landed two striped marlins of 2641bs and 2301b5. Mr T. Carter, of Te Awamutu, caught a 4251bs hammerhead shark, while Mr W. Wheeler, of Takapuna, landed a 256bs striped marlin from Mr H. Vipond’s Ozone. With the weather conditions still' frost favourable prospects are bright. Sunday was an off-day, one party of American medical corps men being unsuccessful, but much enjoying their trip.
