Urges Need To Provide For Aged Whangarei Women
“This matter has troubled me a great deal for a long time. I honestly think the time is over-ripe for the board to do something for the elderly women of our community." This comment was made by Mr. W. Jones at today’s meeting of the Whangarei Hospital Board in giving notice of his intention to move at the next meeting that some home be provided for womenfolk of the district who require attention. The board had discussed two cases, one being a woman 80 years of age, where it had been difficult to provide nursing and other aid. Mr. Jones said the b/ard had never grappled with the question, but had dealt with isolated cases as they arose, He considered one of the board’s greatest responsibilities was to make adequate provision for the elderly women of the community. Mr. H. Younger suggested that the Mayor (Mr. Jones) should give a detailed report on the matter. The chairman (Mr. J. A. S. Mac Kay) said the cases the board had had before it were only isolated ones, and there might be many others known to the Mayor and other members. He asked all members to make full inquiry.
