Woman Stowaway On American Ship
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, This Day. Discovered at sea on board an American oil tanker and brought back to Auckland by launch, Joan Watson, 29, waitress, came before Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., in court this morning on charges of stowing away on a vessel and entering on board ship without a permit. The police stated that the vessel had to turn back after sailing and put the woman off at Tiri. She had in her possession £l5O/10/- in New Zealand currency, 30/- in Australian currency and about ICI American dollars. She was stated to be married and lived with her husband at Herne Eay. According to her, he had told her to get someone else. Some months ago she met an American merchant navy man and got 1 o love him. The man returned to America and she was anxious to reach America to join him. She had been unsuccessful in an attempt to obtain a permit to leave for America. The money in her possession was her own savings. Remarking that, by her actions, the woman had interfered with the ship’s programme, the magistrate said he would impose a substantial fine of £25.
