13 Boys Drowned At Wolf Cub Picnic

SYDNEY, This Day. Thirteen boys, all aged between eight and 10 years, were drowned when a punt overturned during a sudden storm on the Clarence River, about - 400 miles north of Sydney on Saturday afternoon. Eighteen other boys were rescued. The lads, who all came from Grafton (population 9000) were attending a Wolf Cubs’ picnic. The large punt capsized only 200 yards from the shore in a channel 60 feet deep. Rowing boats were rushed out in an attempt to rescue the boys. Eyewitnesses said that most of the boys were drowned because they held on to one another in the water. Distracted mothers had to be prevented from running into the river in their anxiety to look for their missing children. Ten of Ihe 13 boys drowned came from one -suburb, and four from the same street.
