Taranaki Farmers And Land Sales Act

(P.A.) NEW PLYMOUTH, Monday. The attitude of dairy farmers in Taranaki to the Servicemen’s Settlement and Land Sales Act was discussed at Stratford on Saturday at the annual meeting of the Federation of Taranaki Co-operative Dairy Factories. A motion requesting the New Zealand Dairy Board to move for an amendment of the Act was defeated by a large majority. The motion read: “That this meeting of dairy representatives requests the Dairy Board to co-operate with the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, and other farming interests to have the Servicemen’s Settlement and Land Sales Act so amended as Jo do justice to those from whom land is taken, and to restore security of tenure to those already owning land.”

The opinion was expressed that the Act had some merits and was not directed against the owner of a 100acre farm, but against holders of large areas. Farmers should assist the Government in getting land for soldier settlement, and if the farmers could not find a better method than the existing Act, then they should not hamper the Government,
