America Must Consider Needs Of Other Peoples

NEW YORK, October 1

‘‘Private initiative alone will not be able to heal the economic wounds of the postwar world, therefore the Government must continue to have a hand in business, take risks and make investments which private capital cannot afford,” said the Secretary for Commerce (Mr. Jesse Jones) addressing the Board of Trade. “However the Government should not stay active in industry longer than needed. America cannot shoulder the whole load and must co-operate with the United Nations in order to assist the countries who have suffered most. As an example! excess plant facilities could be shipped from America to other nations. We must supply others what they need, not what we want to sell, because otherwise we cannot expect them to deal with us.”
