Luftwaffe's Black Day Over Europe
LONDON, September 28
Today was a black day for the Luftwaffe defending the European fortress, British and American air forces destroying a total of 58 German fighters for the loss of eight bombers and seven fighters. It is officially announced that strong formations of Fortresses raiding Emden and also Aurich, destroyed 18 fighters. Escorting Thunderbolts shot down 22.
Marauders attacking airfields in France shot down four fighters and escorting Royal Air Force, Dominion and Allied fighters, shot down 14 more. Our losses were seven heavy bombers, one medium bomber and seven fighters.
Hanover Heavily Bombed Bomber Command planes were over Germany in very great strength last night, says an Air Ministry communique. The main force attacked Hanover, where large fires were started. Brunswick and Emden were also bombed.
Fighter Command planes destroyed seven enemy planes over Holland and North-west Germany. Thirty-eight bombers and one fighter are missing.
