Aged Hitler Haunted By Fears Of Future

LONDON, September 28

The Swedish journalist, Gunnar Pihl, in an article in the “Daily Telegraph” says: “The last time I saw Hitler in the spring of 1943 he had recovered from attacks of hysteria, but was aged, stooping, lean and greyfaced. His eyes were haunted by fears of the future as if he shared with the majority of his soldiers a foretaste of defeat.

“Elastic defence and shortening of the fronts constitute Germany’s last gamble. She is still immensely strong, but it is just as dangerous for the Allies to over-estimate as to underestimate that strength. Germany needs time to carry out her retreats and stabilise her position. “She may then look around for a political settlement before being overwhelmed by military defeat. It is essential that she be not given time to carry through these plans. Remember always the psychological weakness of the German armed forces is that they are subconsciously convinced of approaching defeat.”
