Fascist Regime Falls
(8.0. W., 2 p.m.) RUGBY, July 25. The announcement that Mussolini had resigned and appointment of Badoglio as h ! s successor was broadcast by Rome radio in its last home news bulletin of the day. Two significant omissions were noted by those listening tc the broadcast. The first was the departure from the- usual method of referring to the time as related to the Fascist era and the second was the absence of the Fascist Anthem, whereas the Royal Anthem was played right through. A proclamation from the King was broadcast, announcing acceptance of Mussolini’s resignation and his replacement by Eadogiio, after which the King declared he personally had assumed high command of Italian armed forces. No recriminations could be allowed in this solemn hour of grave anxiety. Everybody must take up his post and Italy, through the valour of her troops and determination of the civil population, would find the road to recovery* in respect of her old institutions. Badoglio issued a second proclamation in which he said he would go on. E'y order of the King he had taken over the military government of the country v/ith full power. He had received clear and definite orders and they would be scrupulously carried out These who attempted to hamper them would be ruthlessly punshed.
