N.Z. Pilot Awarded D.F.C.
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. For skill, courage and tenacity during action over Germany. Squadron-Leader John Ramsey Si. John, R.N.Z A.F., has been awarded the- D.F.C. The citation says: "Squadron-Leader St. John was piioi of an aircraft detailed to attack Mulheim one night in June. During the flight, the bomber was attacked by two "nemy planes.' which scored repeated hits. With superb airmanship, Squadron-Leader St. John succeeded in evading his attackers, and despite the fact, that one engine was out of action and the rudder lost, tire starboard elevator damaged, and the elevator-control jammed, ne flew the aircraft back to his base and landed safely. He displayed outstanding skill, courage and determination.” Squadron-Leader St. John trained for a pilot’s A license at Marlborough Aero Club, and was accepted for a short-ser-vice commission in the R.A.F. in lfta6. Leaving New Zealand in December of that year, he was mentioned in despatches in New Year's Honours of 1942. He is 26 years of age. He was born at Nelson, and educated at the Nelson College. Before taking up flying as a career, he was emploved as a dental mechanic. His oarents are Mr. and Mrs. F. F. St. John, formerly of Nelson, and now of Wellington
