Family Aeroplanes
NEW YORK, July 22. Virtually all American aircraft companies are designing post-war private planes, said the Chief of Civil Aeronautics Authority (Mr. Albert Vollmecke). He added that one company was trying to lower the engine cost of a family plane from five dollars to two-and-a-half per horse-power. Another had designed for moderate performance, a “roadable” family plane at rock-bottom cost which was a combination of automobile and aeroplane, with an air cruising speed of ICO miles per hour. This plane w'ill be’ tailless and a four-wheeled engine will be located • in the rear wings, which will either be folding or detachable. Experiments were also carried out with roadable helicopters. Mr. Vollmecke said designers were attempting to popularise post-war family planes by making flying radically easier. For example the control, throttle stick and rudder will be combined in one lever.
