German Spy In New York
(8.0. W., 1.30 p.m.) RUGBY, June 28. Charged with violating the espionage laws by transmitting vital war information to Germany, Ernest Lahmitz was imprisoned at New York pending action by the Federal Grand Jury, states an agency message. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Lahmitz received espionage training in Germany. He became an air raid warden in New York as a cover for gathering information. 'lt is said he transmitted information in invisible ink, including the actual number of ships in some convoys. Earlier Message The Justice Department has announced the arrest of Ernest Frederick Lehmitz on a charge of espionage for Germany, ine Director of the Federal Bureau of investigation (Mr. Hoover) said that Lehmitz wrote letters to the German intelligence in Europe conveying information of shipping conditions in New York harbour and describing troop and convoy movements. Lehmitz was born in Hamburg and became a United States citizen in 1924. He posed as a patriotic American citizen while receiving large sums of money through international banking channels.
