Portuguese Reveal Friendship For Britain
(Rcc. 1C.45 a.m.) . LONDON. June 28. The band of a Portuguese* liner, which picked up the crew of a British merchantman torpedoed in the Indian Ocean, struck up “God Save the King” as the survivors were taken aboard. The 33 survivors were nearly five days in a lifeboat before the liner sighted them ancl landed them at a British port. They said that the Portuguese lined the rail and cheered the British seamen. It was not certain whether the submarine was a Japanese or German, it was a big one which surfaced to enable* an officer, speaking perfect English, to question those in the lifeboat.
