Two Fairly Heavy Raids On London
LONDON, May 17. London was raided By German fighter bombers flying at a great height and then swooping in and dropping bombs on several districts. There were some fatalities. The first London alert sounded shortly before midnight and the second after midnight. The second one lasted a considerable period, during which there was sustained gunfire. Damage in one district included a block of flats shattered and several houses and a private hotel damaged. During the first alert a loud explosion was heard over a widespread area. It was not the usual sound of an exploding bomb or gunfire. Inquiries failed to establish the cause. Some casualties were caused by high explosives. Rescue workers, tunnelling in the wreckage of three houses in one London district, found the body of a child, while nearby a battered bird-cage contained a canary, which was still alive. At least four raiders were shot down.
