Kaikohe Chamber Discusses State Of Roads
(Special) KAIKOHE, This Day. Two subjects of importance were discussed at length at the monthly meeting of the Kaikohe Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday night—the slate of northern roads, particularly the Kaikohe-Ohaeawai main highway, and the transport of school-children from the Taheke-Punaki-tere district. The former is a matter which has come up for discussion repeatedly, but it appears that little can be done owing to lack of co-operation from those bodies responsible for the maintenance of roads. A reply of a perfunctory nature was received from the Bay of Islands County Council to a letter from the chamber drawing their attention to the condition of the roads. In the meantime, nothing more can be done, but it is hoped that an endeavour will be made to alleviate the extremely serious condition the roads are now in. Transport of School-children Relating to the problem of arranging for transport for school-children on the Kaikohe-Rawene road, it was stated that the present bus, owned by Rawene Motors, was able to carry only six children. Consequently, several -Mldren from Waima, Taheke and Punakitere were unable to attend the high school. When the owner of Rawene Motors (Mr. Spender) applied to the No. 1 Transport Licensing Committee, at its last sitting in Kaikohe, for permission to supply additional means of transport, he was refused. The chamber’s secretary was instructed to write to Mr. Phelan explaining the aspect regarding the conveyance of these children.
