Whangraruru Not To Have New Wharf
Si at ins that hi> had found no place where it would be possible to work a vessel in till weathers, the Whangaivi Harbour Board's engineer (Mr W. M. Fraser), reported in the board at their meeting today that ho had visited Whangaruru on October 22, and bad examined the shore along the western side of the harbour from IVlckau to Punaruku, a distance of about four miles, in regard to a proposed new wharf. A landing there would be exposed to heavy seas from the south-east round bv east to north-east, and the rocky and tugged nature of the coast was such that wharf construction would be verv expensive, said Mr Fraser.
A place named Karo had been pointed out to him as having been used as a sheltering and landing place for canoes in the early days. Mr Fraser was of the opinion that as the place was fairly sheltered by a reef of rock which projected at high tide, a loaded barge could be safely grounded and worked • by a lorry in reasonably line weather. So far there was no load to Karo and ii would appear that the existing wharf was sttllcienl IV>r the trade of the district. A scheme had been outlined for the closer settlement of the district and provision of more roads, and if this was done the provision of a new wharf might be warranted.
