Rickenbacker Flew Battle-Scarred Plane

(Rec. Noon.) NEW YORK, Dec. 16. Corporal Bartek. who was rescued with Captain Rickenbacker, said that the only plane available for Captain Rickenbacker's secret mission on October 21 was a bullet marked bombscarred 817 bomber which survived the Japanese bombing of Hawaii on December 7, 1941. The plane bore a seal showing it had been approved so Captain Rickenbacker decided to try it. The navigation instruments failed 500 miles out at sea and the pilot became lost. Later all the instruments went dead. The pilot landed on the sea when the gas failed. Corporal Eartek, who was the aviation mechanic aboard the plane, said that another bomber had been thoroughly checked anl prepared for Captain Rickenbacker but was sent on another mission before Captain Rickenbacker arrived.
