Westfield Beef In Demand
The yarding of ox beef at the Westfield fat stock sales yesterday was a full one. Competition was keen and firm values were maintained. A large entry of cows and heifers also sold under steady demand. Messrs. Alfred Buckland and Sons, Ltd., Dalgety and Co., Ltd., and the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., report:— Beef.—A full entry of ox beef came forward, for which the demand was steady and late rates again ruled. A big entry of first-class cow and heifer beef was penned and sold at values about on a level with last week. Extra choice ox sold to 4C/-; choice and prime ox. 37/- to 39/-; ordinary and plain, 33/- to 35/-; prime young cow and heifer beef, 30/- to 34/-; ordinary cow beef, 22/- to 24/-. Extra heavy prime steers ranged in price from £l6 to £l7/7/6; heavy prime steers. £l4/10/- to £ls/10/-; lighter prime steersi £l3 to £l6; light prime steers, £ll/10/to £l2/10/-; small and unfinished steers, £9 to £lO/15/-; extra heavy .prime young cows and heifers, £lO to £ll/17/6; heavy prime cows and heifers, £8 to £9; lighter prime cows and heifers, £6/10/- to £7/10/-; other killable cows, £5 to £6. Sheep.—An average entry ol’ well-finish-ed wethers again sold under keen competition and late rates were fully maintained. Ewes also sold freely. Extra heavy prime wethers. £2/3/6 to £2/6/-; heavv, £2/1/6 to £2/2/6; medium, £l/19/to £2; light, £l/15/- to £l/17/6; plain and unfinished, £l/8/- to £l/13/-; extra heavv prime young and maiden ewes, £l/14/- to £l/16/9; heavy, £l/10/- to £l/13/-; lighter. £l/3/6 to £l/8/-; plain and aged, 18/6 to £l/1/-; others, 4/- to 15/6. Lambs. —There was a full entry of lambs, for which competition was good. Extra heavy prime lambs, £l/9/- to £l/11/6; heavy prime, £l/6/- to £l/8/-; medium crime, £l/3/- to £l/5/-; lighter prime, £1 to £ 1/2/-; light prime, 16/- to 18/-; small and plain, 14/- to 15/-. Calves. —The quality generally was not up to the usual standard. Runners. £5 to £B/1/-; heavy vealers, £5/15/- to £7/3/-; medium, £4/15/- to £5/10/-; light. £4 to £4/14/-; small, £1 to £3/18/-; unfinished and bucket-fed. £1 to £l/10/-; bobby and rough calves, 3/- to 18/-.
Pigs.—There was a small entry. Bnconers sold at recent rates, while values for porkers and stores were slightly lower. Choppers. £l/15/- to £3/4/-; heavy baconers, £4/12/- to £4/15/-: medium, £4/4/- to £4/8/-; light, £3/19/- to £4/3/-; heavy porkers, £3/14/- 1o £4/1/-; medium,‘£3/6/- to £3/10/-; light. £2/16/- to £3/2/-; small and unfinished. £2/7/- to £2/13/-; stores. £2/7/- to £2/10/-; slips, £l/13/- to £2; weaners, £l/4/- to £l/18/-.
