Less Drunkenness With Weaker Beer
CHRISTCHURCH, August 12
It is reported that regulations soon will be issued, giving the Minister for Customs power to order breweries to brew beer to 1036 specific gravity. The Minister (Mr. Nordmeyer), questioned tonight about this reported decision of the War Cabinet, declined to comment.
“Unquestionably,” Mr. Nordmeyer replied, when "asked whether the reduction in alcohol content had caused an improvement in the community’s sobriety. Mr. Nordmeyer said police reports indicated a general improvement. It had been said that it was due to less beer being consumed, but he believed that the improvement was due to the lower alcohol content. Figures were not available yet on which any announcement could be substantiated that a smaller quantity Of beer was being drunk.
