Will Fight State Opposition To Tax Act
(Rec. 2 p.m.) CANBERRA. This Day. The "Commonwealth Government will fight State opposition to uniform taxation in the High Court.
This was announced by the Prime Minister (Mr. Curtin.) after he had received official advice that Victoria, Queensland and South Australia arc to contest the validity of the Commonwealth uniform taxation acts.
Mr. Curtin said: “The Commonwealth will defend its own laws. What we have done has been dictated by an imperative sense of national responsibility towards the war.t I cannot, for the life of me, perceive any unfairness or departure from stern logic in a situation in which the nation puts so large a number of its population into uniform, and then levies a uniform tax order to maintain the men in uniform.
“That is not a play on words. It is straight thinking.”
