Germans Will Now Reap Whirlwind Of Air Bombing

[British Official Wireless] (Rec. 11 a.m.) RUGBY, June 10, The British bombing policy has been further explained by the Chief of the Bomber Command (Air-Marshal Harris) in a broadcast.

Air-Marshal Harris said the Germans had entered the war under the quaint illusion that they could bomb everybody in the way and nobody could bomb them. They had sowed the wind and were now beginning to reap the whirlwind. Lubeck, Rostock and Cologne were just a beginning. Although Britain could not yet put 1000 bombers over Germany every night, she has proved it could be done, and, if necessary, be far surpassed. Storm Will Sweep Reich

The force needed for that effort was not yet available, but we would obtain it and could do so from our own resources.

Air-Marshal Harris said the Nazis should take good note of the western horizon, where a cloud, now the size of a man’s hand, would grow to a storm that would sweep Germany. When the whole massive power of the United States was in action, that storm would make the Germans look back to the days of Lubeck, Rostock and Cologne as men in a raging typhoon think back to a gentle zephyr. It might take a year, even two. but the writing was on the wall. To those who claimed bombing would not win the war, he would say it had not been tried yet. Plane Losses Two enemy fighters were destroyed today during Royal Air Force offensive sweeps over Brittany. A few enemy aircraft last night made a brief appearance over the coast of East Anglia, states a communique. Bombs dropped in one district did some damage. There were no casualties. A German fighter was destroyed by British fighters off the south-east coast this morning. The Minister for Air (Sir Archibald Sinclair) confirmed in the House of Commons that plans are being made lor the operation of a powerful United States air force from Britain. An Air Ministry communique states that on Thursday morning Spitfires on patrol destroyed an enemy fighter. In the afternoon Bostons, escorted by Spitfires, bombed the airfield at Lannion. Two enemy fighters were destroyed. One of our Bostons is missing.
