Supplied Liquor To HalfCaste Soldiers

KAIKCHE. This Day. Theodore Baker pleaded guilty to two charges concerning the unlawful supply of liquor to two half-caste Maori soldiers cn April 11, at a siting of the Kaikohe Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday. ‘‘These are very serious offences at this time,” said Sergeant H. Sargent prosecuting. Cn April 11 at 6 plm. tho police had seen Baker leave the hotel with a large parcel containing 15 bottles of beer. He met the soldiers in a paddock. Both soldiers were carrying bags and when the police investigated them later they were found to contain a large number of bottles of beer. Baker’s explanation was that he had chanced to see one of the soldiers obviously in a state of intoxication and had decided to •do him a good turn by helping him along. He pur his bottles in ihe soldier’s bags to enable him to have both hands free to assist him. He was fined £5 on each charge.
