Sidi Rezegh V.C. Dead
rßritish Official Wireless! (Rec. 12.30 p.m.) RUGBY, March 8. It is disclosed that Brigadier J. C. Campbell, who won the Victoria Cross in November at Sidi Rezegh and the D.S.O. in Libya in 1940, was killed in a motor accident in the Western Desert last month when a car overturned.
He commanded troops, including the regiment of tanks which held the Sidi Rezegh ridge and aerodrome for two days. He was the spirit of the heroic defence and he was always in the forefront of the heaviest fighting, encouraging bis troops and staging counter-attacks with his remaining tanks, while personally controlling the fire of his guns. On two occasions he himself manned a gun to replace casualties.
During the final enemy attack he was wounded but continued to control the fire of the batteries which inflicted heavy losses on enemy tanks at point blank range and finally acted as leader to one of the guns himself. In spite of his wound he refused to leave his commapd.
