Another Grass Fire At Whangarei

Another grass fire necessitated the calling of the Whangarei Fire Brigade at about 6.15 last evening. The outbreak occurred in a vacant section near the intersection of Cross and Upper Bank Street. The brigade ’’an out a length of hose and speedily extinguished the flames which had caught on to a hedge. When the alarm sounded, a number of residents of the avenues noticed a large colun n of smoke coming from a property in Fourth Avenue. Thinking this was the fire for which the brigade had been called, thev left their teas or dinners on the table and hastened to the spot, only to find they had been misled. On a large vacant section a man was purposely burning the dry grass. He had it well under control, as the would-be spectators noticed before they returned to their meals.
