Y.W.C.A Board Of Directors Meets

A meeting of the Board of Directors of the Whangarei Y.W.C.A. was held on March 3 in the club rooms. Present: Mesdames Court (chair), Oliver, W. E. H. Jackman, Tudehope, W. Jones, J. J. Wilson, T. E. Woodman, Barrlball, Miss McLeod, Miss KUlen and Miss Stubbs (general secretary). Apologies were received from Mesdames Taylor, N. Horrobin, A. K. Lambly and W. Hodsell. General Secretary’s Report The general secretary reported: Most of my time has been spent this month getting to know our members and the people of Whangarei. I am confident that the Y.W.C.A here meets a definite need in the life of the community, and I feel very strongly that this year will present a challenge to us that we really do see and face the need of the women and girls of Whangarei and the North. The Y.W.C.A. was born during a crisis in the life of the women and girls of that time, and we today owe it to those pioneer women to see that we keep our vision clear and our aim in sight. Girls are a national asset, and in rendering service to them we are rendering a national service, the value of which is in our own hands. Clubs.—Club activities as yet are not in full swing. The Business Girls’ Club is a most alive and enthusiastic group of girls. The Tuesday before last they had their general meeting, and elected their committee for the year. Joan Hodsell was elected president, and June Miller secretary. Their programme this year includes half an hour “keep fit,” to be taken by the leaders in turn. Miss Fraser, the Plunket Nurse, has agreed to give them a series of five talks lasting half an hour each night. At the end of this series it is intended to study kindergarten work. A cycling group has been formed, and also a drama group. Hikurangi.—lt has not to date been possible to arrange a visit to Hikurangi, but I am keenly interested in our first venture in decentralised work, and I hope before long that we may, with the assistance. of voluntary leaders, be able to develop still further our rural activities. Miss Campbell’s Visit.—The visit of Miss Jean Campbell, National Youth Secretary, beginning on March 25 for three weeks will be a great opportunity for us to develop leadership in our club activities. I feel that we should take every advantage of Miss Campbell’s specialised training in girls' work to build into our clubs, and that we should in every way possible arrange for as manv of the youth of Whangarei as we can to meet Miss Campbell.

Conclusion.—ln all our work this year I feel that we must stress the triangle of the Y.W.C.A.—development of body, mind and spirit—and ever keep before us, both personally and as ’an association, the Y.W.C.A. world motto —“Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, saith the Lord of Hosts.”

It is intended to hold a membership afternoon, to which other organisations will be invited, to meet Miss Campbell on Wednesday, April 8.
