Casey Denies U.S. Press Fairy Tale
NEW YORK, Feb. 17. The columnists Pearson and Allen, in their nationally syndicated newspaper feature tonight describe a meeting in Washington between Mr Churchill and the Australian Minister (Mr R. G. Casey), during which, they say. the defence of Singapore was discussed. They allege that Mr Casey told Mr Churchill point blank that Singapore must be defended, and warned him that, otherwise, the Australian troops would be withdrawn from the Near East.
Furthermore, they say, Mr Casey suggested that if London deserted the Australians by not defending Singapore. Australia could withdraw from the war and make a separate peace with Germany. Mr Churchill is said to have yielded to this threat, and sent reinforcements, which arrived too late.
The writers predict that this incident will forge closer ties between Australia and the United States.
Mr Casey has authorised the Associated Press to say that the allegations are entirely without foundation.
