Hitler Stakes Party Future On Personal Egotism
LONDON, January 9. The German army in Russia particularly on the central front and the Black Sea coast, shows no sign of being able to stabilise the front for the winter, or of preventing the Russians continuing to inflict heavy losses of men and equipment. Ti e possible effects of these processes on always tense relations between the German armed forces and the Nazi party are attracting attention in Britain and America. Hitler’s Stake “The Times” writes: “Hitler is calling on his troops for a supreme effort. staking his whole fate and that of his party upon his personal egotism and prestige. If they can get themselves out of this mess, he says in effect, all will yet be well and the great German military machine will once again run smoothly and effectively. “But the soldiers may well be asking who it was got them into this mess. It was not themselves, for it is universally agreed that they have fought well and distinguished themselves as much by the endurance of terrible hardships as by tactical skill.
Russian Example
“Will, not such officers and men of the German army as have retained the power to think see the hand of Hitier lather than the general staff in blind recklessness, rash banking on previous successes, of the advance on Rostov, the suicidal grab at Tikhvin, and perhaps also the final offensive against Moscow?” “The Times” concludes: “It would be as wrong to bank on hopeful signs just because they are hopeful as to read too much into them. There is encouragement enough in the Russian achievement to induce the utmost military and industrial efforts on other fronts.”
