COMPETITION RESULTS

Vegetable Stew

There may be a shortage of vegetables in the shops, but definitely not at H.Q.— but they’re not edible, I’m sorry to say. This proved a very popular competition, and the prizes had to be allocated on the merit of the riddles. Incidentally, the Taniwha had a very good meal of vegetable . stew,, because quite a number of entries were without the riddle and so were disqualified. Prizes of 2/6 go to: JEAN COWIE, Church Road, Kaitaia. Q: “Why is Hitler colour blind? A: Because he thought the Reds were Yellow.

FRANCES COTTON, Punaruku Native School, Whangaruru South. Q: Why are soldiers tired in April? A: Because they’ve had a long March for 31 days. :

“Advocate” Office, Kaitaia, Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1941, Bear Norlhlanders, Bid you know that at times there is almost a rodeo in Northland? When I visited Te Paki stationmost northern farm holding in New Zealand —£ was told that mustering- time was just like the wild west scenes in cowboy pictures. One of the two brothers who own the station said Maori musterers performed wonderful feats. They rode up hill and down dale at break-neck pace herding the cattle, allowed to run wild on Te Faki’s thousands of acres. These Maori cow-boys of the Far North can throw’ a beast with ease, head off runaway stock and do all the things that the Western cowboys do. They take all manner of risks, yet, strange as it may seem, are seldom if ever hurt. Perhaps one of these days I’ll be able to see a Te Paki mustering. I hope so, anyw'ay. Cheerio to you all.
