No Decorative Lighting For Christmas, New Year

No decorative electric lighting is to he carried out in Whangarei in connection with the Christmas and New Year periods this year. In a letter received by the Whangarei Borough Council at its monthly meeting on Tuesday evening, the electricity controller. Wellington, stated that owing to the necessity for the conservation of electricity and the curtailing of all unnecessary nublic lighting, it was considered, in the interests of all concerned, that it would be inadvisable to permit the use of Decorative lighting such as festoon strings and special coloured lighting displays during the Christmas and New Year periods. Further the psychological effect on the general public, and particularly consumers, might have a detrimental effect on the national effort and appeals to economise in the use of electricity. Therefore the council was instructed to refuse permission for such lighting to be used. The advice was received.
