Import Restrictions Make N.Z.’s Hair Stand On End
[Special to “Northern Advocate”] AUCKLAND, This Day
Brushes and combs are stated to be especially scarce in Auckland. Import restrictions were the most important factor contributing to the shortage, said the manager of a leading warehouse which is regarded as the largest importer of combs in the country. These articles, it was stated, had come under the fancy goods section of the restrictions, and because of the fact that such articles were practically prohibited from import the public must experience shortage of combs. The shortage applies not only to Auckland but to the whole of the Dominion. On Men’s Part The most serious shortage exists in the supply of men’s combs. One manager said it was the usual custom to include combs in soldiers’ military hold-alls, but of late this had not been dene because it was impossible to procure a man’s comb. Most firms carry a very small stock of the cheaper grade- of women’s combs.
The shortage of raw materials for the manufacture of brushes is stated to be entirely due to the war, and any relief cf the position is not likely until after the war.
