U.S. Kearny Fought Pack Of U-Boats

WASHINGTON, Dec. 3,

The chairman of the United States Senate, naval committee (Senator David I. Walsh), has made public a letter from the Chief of Naval Operations (Admiral H. R. Stark), revealing that the destroyer Kearny fought a pack of U-boats for nearly three hours before she was struck by a torpedo which caused severe damage. Admiral Stark said the Kearny was convoying merchant vessels, including American ships, in the Atlantic. Some were sunk or damaged, although none of those sunk were American. He refused to disclose the nationality and number of the ships sunk or damaged. Senator Walsh said he was asking Admiral Stark to make a similar statement about the sinking of the American destroyer Reuben James.
