OBITUARY

ine recent deatn Mr. j. K. Rogers removes a familiar figure and an old secuer in the history ox Maungaturoto. Death followed a painful illness, for the last eight months of which he was a patient in Te Kopuru Hospital. Born in Newton, Auckland, 83 years ago, the son of the late Mr. Jonn Rogers, deceased came to Maungaturoto as a boy. rie early took up farming work, and had resided there ever since. As a young man, he took part in all the social activities of the district, lie and Ins wite evincing a keen interest in the local shows. For some years Maungaturoto held its annual siiow, under tlio management ot the former Otamatea Agricultural and Pastoral Association, wnile the North Kaipara Society continued its exhibition at Paparoa. Former Mail Carrier Mr. Rogers spent one contract term as a man carrier on the old overland mail route from Wellsford to Matakohe. His long life was marked by the industry which characterised the old settlers, and by an upright character. Elis wife, formerly Miss Milly Taylor, predeceased him some six years ago. Mr. Rogers is survived by his brother, Mr. G. B. Rogers, of Wairere; two sisters, Mrs. R. Hume, of Maropiu, Northern Wairoa, and Mrs. A. Beeston, of Remuera; one son, Mr. John Rogers, of Maungaturoto, and two daughters, Mrs. McKay, and Mrs. Brinkolf, of Auckland. The eldest son, Gordon, was killed in the last war. The interment took place at the cemetery of the old Maungaturoto Congregational Church, old friends and neighbours paying a last tribute of respect. Rev. J. Sands conducted the service, the Masonic portion being read by Mr. Dell.
