Timber Yard Fire Quickly Controlled

Caused by sparks from a smoke stack falling on to sawdust on the roof of a shed, lire broke out at the Whangarei Timber Company's yards late yesterday afternoon. Fanned by a strong wind, the flames quickly mounted, but employees were able to play a hose on to the flames which soon subsided, without doing any serious damage. The fire brigade was called, but the flames were well under control when they arrived a very short time after the alarm had been given. If the outbreak had not been noticed by the men who had finished work for the day, the consequences may have been very serious, but the only damage suffered was to the roof of a small shed.
