Glasgow Labour Troubles Bring Chaos
(Rec. 2.30 p.m.i LONDON, Nov. 13. Nearly 500 Glasgow bus drivers and conductors were dismissed because they persisted in a strike over duty rosters. Another 1000 employees of the Glasgow Council who were on strike in sympathy with the bus men, will be dismissed unless they return to work. The Transport Ministry authorities have decided that R.A.F. and army service lorries will take over Glasgow’s transport unless the strikers return before midnight tonight. Only 70 per cent of the 1500 busmen reported for work today. The strikers claim an increase of £2/7/- per week, which will bring their wages to £7/9/weekly. They also claim better rostering. Walking to Work Glasgow's transport is in a state of chaos. Trams are crammed far beyond regulation loads. Lorries and cars have helped but armies of workers are forced to walk to work. Many on vital works are two or three hours’ late. Shop stewards from all the Clydeside shipyards marched in protest through Glasgow streets after a deputation had asked for an increase of 10/- a week for shipyard labourers. The deputation instanced men receiving £2/3/- for three weeks after income tax deduction had been made.
