Did Mrs. Merry Leave A Will?
[Special to “Northern Advocate”] WELLINGTON. This Day. Relatives of Mrs. Alice Merry, the 83-year-old widow, who was found dead in her bed at her home in Cambridge Terrace, Wellington, on Wednesday. are certain that she left a will and that it will be found shortly. The police found £26,500 in bank notes in Mrs. Merry's home. “She told me about 12 months ago that she had made a will, but she gave no indication of its contents,” one of Mrs. Merry’s nieces said today. A Shock to All “It was a shock to every one of us.” said another • niece, referring to the discovery of the bank notes. "We had no idea she had such a large amount in the place. On occasions she would have as much as £4OO or £SOO on hand to settle some transaction, but never did we get an inkling that she was keeping with her such a huge amount as the police found.” It appears that Mrs. Merry did not believe in placing money with the banks, but preferred the trust companies. To all intents and purposes, she did her own legal work, and only took legal advice when some unusual development in her many business dealings necessitated it. "One •of the shrewdest business women it was possible to meet,” was a description given by one of her relatives.
