Wants Readjustment Of Heavy Traffic Fees
A readjustment of the distribution of heavy traffic fees was asked by the Kamo Town Board in a letter to the Whapgarei Borough Council at its monthly meeting last evening. “The present allocation of five per cent, to Hikurangi and three and a half per cent, to Kamo has been unaltered for a considerable time, while the heavy traffic in the town district has increased greatly during the past three years due largely to local industries which had been in operation during that time,” the letter stated. “Kamo Collieries' coal mine has been responsible for the carting of timber, mine props and coal. W. J. Rowsell’s Kamo saw-mill has been operating for about two years and a large quantity of logs and sawn timber is being carted. “Ironstone is being carted regularly from the Three Mile Bush, and Fuller’s earth and diatomaaceous earth from Crawford’s property, and clay from Whau Valiev. These are additional to the ordinary increase in the carting of goods, cream, etc. “My board would like to see Kamo put on at least an equal footing with Hikurangi, and would ask that this be taken into consideration when the allocation of heavy traffic fees is again being considered.” It was decided to convene a meeting of local authorities controlling roads in the Whangarei district to discuss the question of heavy traffic fee allocations, the Mayor (Mr. W.. Jones) and Cr. R. J. N. Crosby) being appointed the council representatives.
