Small Savings In Britain Amount To £2O Per Head

[British Official Wireless] (Rec. 11 a.m.) . RUGBY. October 6. The raising of £ 1,000,000,000 in the War Savings Campaign was celebrated by a luncheon given by the Chancellor of the Exchequer. A message from the King congratulating the committee of the Savings Campaign was read, in which His Majesty recalled that 18 months ago he sent a message on the occasion of the first £100,000,000 being completed. Speaking at the luncheon the Chancellor (Sir Kingsley Wood) recalled that the magnificent total now reached had been attained by small savings and represented an amount equal to £2O per head of population. Comparison With Last War Remarking that true comparison with the last war was not easy because the campaign was not under way until 1916, he reminded the audience that by the end of 1918 about £274,000,000 had been subscribed by small savers and he added that the result now reached more than matched the higher cost of the present war over the last. While congratulating small savers in the country on reaching this vast sum within two years, the Chancellor said he regarded it as no more than a first instalment.
