Japs. Missed Chance, Dutchmen Believed
BRISBANE, October 6. Japan has missed her chance of making a southward drive -into the Netherland East Indies, except at a very high price, declared the leader of the Netherland East Indies press delegation (Mr. van der Plas), who is visiting Australia. He and his colleagues agreed that had Japan begun her thrust in December. 1940, she might have been successful, as both the Netherlands East Indies and Malaya were unprepared. Mr. van der Plas is making a special appeal for Australian steel to meet the Netherlands naval needs. It is reported from Singapore that three French military police were killed and several Thai border police wounded in a clash on the Thai-Indo-China border. Bangkok newspapers report the incident without details. The Domei news agency is again accusing Thailand of behaving in an anti-Japanese and pro-British manner.
