American Markets For Dominion Meats
[Special to "Northern Advocate”] AUCKLAND, This Day. There were markets at the moment for increasing quantities of Dominion meats and by-products in the United States, particularly on account of the heavy calls on United States and Canadian supplies on the eastern American sea-board, stated Mr. A. Rowlands, of Messrs. W. and R. Fletcher, Ltd., who has returned from a business trip to America, in an interview today. Among 'he difficulties to be faced in the development of the Dominion’s meat trade with North America was the shipping question, while there were heavy tariffs. The farming communities in the Middle East were powerful and active in the protection of their industry and trade interests where imports were concerned, he said. Position Improved Pointing out that the British Government was endeavouring to lift 275,000 tons of New Zealand meat in the coming season, Mr. Rowlands said that the position was considerably improved as far as the Dominion was concerned. The boning of all quartered beef for shipment to Britain and the Middle East had resulted in the maximum economies being effected in storage and shipping space, and in the same way the telescoping of lambs _ was being so handled that the maximum utility was being obtained both of the meat itself and the freezing, storage and shipping space. The substantial increased capacity in the Dominion was another satisfactory factor.
