Paparoa

At the monthly meeting in August, Miss Jessie Wilson presided over her final W.I. meeting in Paparoa. There was lan excellent attendance of members, and also a number of visitors. To fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of her daughter, Mrs. Tom Wilson, was elected president unopposed amid hearty applause. A demonstration on spinning fleece wool with a “Lloyd” gadget attached to a treadle sewing machine was given by Mrs. L. Worthington, of Maungaturoto Women’s Institute, who also explained what a great help this little, inexpensive | spinner could be in patriotic work, especially when bought skeins are scarce and when every ounce of wool is needed urgently. The demonstrator showed specimens ot the different ply wool she had spun, also several garments knitted from the homespun wool, including a child’s vest, a pair of men’s mittens and the long, heavy senooot sox. Two schoolgirls were sent over from school to learn what they could, and report at school on the demonstration. Afternoon tea was a welcome relaxation, after which Mrs. A. H. Tibbits rendered an item, “Haere Ra.” on the musical saw. Mr;s. Hay played a pianoforte solo, accompanied by Mrs. Tibbits with spoons. Ten quilts, very nicely made from sheeps' wool, were on view. These were made by one of the members, Mrs. T. Wright, and kindly given to the Institute to donate to the patriotic committee. Votes of thanks and appreciation to her and to Mrs. Worthington were carried by acclamation. The hostesses were Mesdames Griffin and C. Dodds, assisted by other members.
