Meningitis Cases In Wellington Area
[Per Press Association. —Copvrientl j ■ WELLINGTON. This Day. Three cases of cerebro-spinal meningitis were reported from the central Wellington area during the week ended yesterday. This brings the total in the last four months to 12 cases, three of which have been fatal. Two of those who died were from the Wellington . city area. One was a baby boy, aged five months, and the second a youth of 17. The third was a man aged 32, who had just come from the Auckland district. As far as could be ascertained there was no possible connection between the three cases. A few years ago, said the medical officer for health (Dr. H. Smith), mortality from meningitis was 66 per cent, but with the advent of new drugs it had been reduced to approximately 15 per cent. “There is no sign of the Northern epidemic having spread here,’’ said Dr. Smith. “One can expect these sporadic cases at any time. The infection may be carried in the nose and throat, and the only thing to do is to avoid overcrowding and, where possible, close contact with fellowhumans.’’
