Two Years’ War Sobers Nazis
(Rec. noon.) LONDON, September 4. Whatever motives lie behind its action, the German propaganda machine permitted a much more moderate tone in the articles which appeared throughout the German Press on the second anniversary of the war. There is no doubt whatever that, superficially. a more chastened mood prevails. Meaning Of Total War
The “Neueste Nachrich,” of Munich, says: “Now we know what total war means. We must be united to those numerous ones who have lost their breadwinners. But. at the same time, we must strengthen our morale, as the enemy does everything to undermine the home front.” The “Schwarze Korps," the official Nazi organ, commenting on the question whether the High Command did not count, “like everyone else,” on revolution in Russia to assist a speedy German victory, is satisfied that “the planning and execution of the campaign does not justify the conclusion that the High Command has made a mistake.” Will Hunger Win ? The strongest statement comes from Colonel Soldan. the military commentator for the “Volkischer Beobachter,” who fails to find a convincing answer to the question he himself put: “Can it possibly happen again, as in tlie previous war, that hunger, distress and misery can triumph over our soldiers’ courage and the quality of their weapons?” Such comments are hardly in accord with the noisy fanfares with which Goebbels recently introduced his broadcast announcement of the complete annihilation .of the Russian forces.
