Whangarei Ladies’ Gardening Club

The fortnightly meeting of the Ladies’ Gardening Club was held at the Masonic Temple, Albert Street, on June 9. Mrs. Webber presided over a good attendance. Miss K. Pickmere, the speaker for the afternoon, gave, a most interesting address on “Plants and Discovery,” this being an account of how the search for plants, especially spices, led to discovery of new lands, and had a great influence on world history. Spices were very .valuable in times gone by, and immense fortunes were made by traders who dealt in them.

Many questions were asked by the interested audience, and Miss Pickmere was accorded a very hearty vote of thanks for delightful address.

Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Flux, Ferner, Fulljantes, Haden, Hc-nderson, Tubbs, Relf and Fox.
